Hello and welcome to Stage Right, the online drama ministry of EXW. My name is Dave Marsh and there are a few things you should probably know about me. First, I'm not a ‘theatre guy.' I've never quoted Shakespeare (at least seriously), and I've never played Daddy Warbucks in Annie. Second, I received my ‘training' in writing, directing, and acting at a church called Willow Creek (in Illinois.) Third, I'm an online games producer by trade but my real passion is found in telling others about Christ through contemporary church drama. I have a few opinions about drama in the church as well. I think that contemporary drama is both underutilized and misunderstood. I believe it is something like 5-10 years behind contemporary worship. When many churches think about using drama, it usually involves the Passion Play or a children's Christmas musical. Many people don't have the opportunity to experience what are called ‘slice of life' dramas. These dramas may last only 3-4 minutes long but create a powerful (and many times humorous) illustration on any given Sunday. I also believe that any church, no matter what size, can use drama effectively, giving God glory, and inspire/convict normal folks like you and I to walk closer to God So, what's Stage Right all about? It's about offering you the advice and resources you need to help you create and act in contemporary Christian dramas. I'm no expert, but I've seen lives changed as I continue to strive for excellence in this area, constantly praying that God would use me to tell others about how to live for Him. Over the coming weeks and months, I hope to provide you with articles about creating a drama philosophy, working with your pastor, developing a team, writing short effective scripts, directing actors, and acting on stage. I also look forward to hearing from you, taking suggestions on topics that you feel should be covered Over the last 3 years, I've written over 45 dramas that are easy to memorize, require few actors, and are highly humorous and relevant. These dramas are available to you for free and will be added to this site over the course of the next few months. You can currently download all of these dramas from my personal site (www.dave-marsh.com) and can contact me personally if you wish (dave). I look forward to serving you here at EXW and want to thank Steve for asking me to jump on board. In His hands Dave Marsh

Wisdom Sold Seperately

Director’s Notes: The book of James says that if we ask God for wisdom, He will gladly give it. He will supply us with all the wisdom we need. The question is: Whether we know God or not, where do we go to find true wisdom? Universities, books, newspapers, the Bible, friends, the Internet, etc?…

Christianity 500m

Director’s Notes: This drama has an Olympics theme and focuses on how we can’t judge others by what we perceive with our own eyes. This includes people we know (a person at church for example) or ones we don’t but have “heard” about (like Amy Grant.) We are only accountable to God for our own…

I Got Me No Job

Director’s Notes: This is the closing drama for a stewardship series. The following sketches (I got me a job, I got me some bills and I got me no time) precede this drama. If you’ve read a lot of my stuff, you know that I don’t get very preachy but this ending seemed to wrap…

Is That Your Final Answer?

Director’sNotes: Pastor Stark was doing a series called ‘Regis and Jesus: Same Questions, Different Answers.’ It was an excellent series on asking people what their final answer is when it comes to marriage, kids, and career. Well, naturally, I had to do a ‘Millionaire’ knock-off. I thought it would be interesting if the final million…

The Insignificant Life of Horace Wimp

Director’s Notes: I decided to bring Horace and Wendy back since Horace has always been a perfect example of someone who takes things to the extreme. Life can sometimes seem so useless or we can get fatalistic when we look at the world around us. We can get into a rut where we feel like…

What’s Not To Love?

Director’s Notes: In Matthew, Jesus rebukes the Pharasees for showing and proclaiming their good deeds in public rather than be rewarded by their Father in heaven in secret. For many Christians it’s easy to do something good but hard to not want to be recognized for it. We need to realize that God delights in…

Dear Mr. Johnson

Director’s Notes: Petra once did a song called “Killing My Old Man.” The song was based on the idea from Ephesians 4 which calls believers to “put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts…” Paul then tells us to “put on the new man which was…

I Got Me No Time

Director’s Notes: Let’s face it – we’re too busy. Steven Curtis Chapman sings a song about the “busyman.” The Bible says that a man dies and leaves behind all his busy activities. Sometimes when I write a drama, God uses it first and foremost in my own life. There are a few laughs in this…

The Box

Director’s Notes: When I lived in Chicago and went to my favorite pizzeria, I always took note of a photo on the wall of the 1906 Chicago Cubs. Okay, I just didn’t take note of it, I was fascinated by it. The photo shows that the stands were packed with tens of thousands of people…

A Man, A Woman and the Test of Doom

Director’s Notes: Pastor Ray asked me to write a light-hearted drama for this weekend centering around marriage. As I thought about what I would write, I asked myself how the world tells you if you have a healthy marriage or not. I quickly scanned the Internet until I found what I was looking for –…
