Psalm 51:10-12 “Create in me pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”
Have you ever sinned, really sinned? I’ve met people for whom their worst sin was running a yellow light. David knew what it was to really sin, to try to hide the sin and when confronted with it he had to face the awful truth. Don’t we hate when that happens! David knew there was no purpose in offering sacrifices because what God desired was a broken spirit, a heart that was broken and contrite before Him. David didn’t do everything right in His life, but He knew the secret to a close relationship with God. There were consequences to His sin, but God was merciful and David was known as a man after God’s own heart. Oh, to be called that! The same merciful God that forgave David is waiting for us to lay our hearts open to Him, to confess our sin and then be restored to the joy of our salvation. For most of us our worst sin won’t be murder, but even a “little”sin can come between our relationship with God.
